The Magic Of Classroom Support - What Teaching Assistants Really Do

In every classroom, the main objective for each student is to be able to understand, learn and remember various concepts taught within that classroom. However, not every student may be able to do the same as their peers in the given amount of time and attention dedicated to the entire classroom. This has given rise to the need for teaching assistants to help to aid those students closely and be able to work in synchronicity with the teacher.

TAs provide valuable support to teachers, helping them to manage classroom behaviour, deliver lessons, and provide individualised attention to students who may need extra help. So what does a Teaching Assistant do in terms of their day to day job? Put simply….they help a classroom to grow and increase their learning capabilities.

Teaching Assistants help to provide additional support, focusing specifically on students who may be struggling including those with physical or mental issues or with special needs or disabilities. This targeted method of learning has shown to reap better outcomes from students. This also allows students to feel more connected within their classrooms.

With teachers taking on a variety of responsibilities, TAs can help to take over a few tasks, in the process allowing teachers to focus on other roles such as planning lessons, assessing student progress, and providing feedback. TAs can also aid with managing classroom behaviour and conduct which allows for a smoother teaching experience for the teacher.

TAs can also play a key role in ensuring that all students feel included in the classroom. In addition to supporting students, TAs can help to create an open and welcoming environment for those students who may be from diverse backgrounds, and work with teachers to develop inclusive teaching practices. Encouraging teamwork and collaboration is a key skill for students and TAs can ensure to help build good relationships and communication.

In recent years, the number of TAs in the UK has increased significantly. The role of being a Teaching Assistant is a fulfilling career as it makes learning accessible for a number of students and allows them to help support and watch them grow as individuals.
